The final step of the project design is choosing the glass or glazing.
The glazing is the top level of protection through which you view the item being framed and can be either glass or acrylic.
Weston Art and Framing offers four types of glass and three types of acrylic to choose from. Which one to choose for your project depends on the size of the piece, the level of protection you desire and your budget.
Glass
Premium Clear Glass
Premium Clear glass is just optically pure glass. It does not protect your project from ultraviolet light and reflections off the glass can make viewing the art more difficult.
Reflection Control Glass
Reflection Control glass is the same as Premium Clear glass except it is chemically etched on one side to reduce reflections. It offers no ultraviolet protection and the etching gives a "fuzzy" appearance to the art. It is the glass on the right in the photo above.
Conservation Clear Glass
Conservation Clear glass is similar to Premium Clear glass except that it reduces ultraviolet light by 99%. This helps reduce color fading caused by light. It is the glass on the left in the photo above. Notice the glare on the glass.
Museum Glass
Museum Glass is by far the best choice for framing. It reduces ultraviolet light by 99% and it eliminates glare without creating a "fuzzy" appearance. See the middle section of glass in the photo above.
Acrylic
While slightly more expensive than glass, acrylic is the glazing of choice for very large projects due to it's light weight. Acrylics also require special care when cleaning.
Premium Clear Acrylite
Similar to Premium Clear glass, Premium Clear Acrylite is optically pure, but offers no reflection control or protection from ultraviolet light.
Conservation Clear Acrylite
Similar to Conservation Clear glass, Conservation Clear Acrylite does offer ultraviolet light protection, but no reflection control.
"Optium" Museum Acrylic
Similar to Museum glass, "Optium" acrylic offers both ultraviolet protection and reflection control with a fraction of the weight of glass.
